General Treatments » Environmental Medicine

There is a growing body of evidence to show that environmental causes of disease are common; the effects can vary from mild debilitation to severe and disabling illness. This is a matter for great public concern.

Medical health problems such as allergies, asthma, multiple chemical sensitivity, Gulf War Illnesses, are all believed to have environmental factors for their causation. Research has also pointed a figure at environmental exposures and how it may affect cognitive function and perhaps contribute to Parkinson's disease and other brain diseases.

Many patients' symptoms do not respond to conventional drug therapy but they are helped or relieved by environmental medicine. There is an urgent need for further research into the way exposure to environmental toxins affect human health; to find effective treatments, and to prevent further unnecessary suffering.

There is a reluctance in some quarters to accept that the many thousand chemicals to which we are daily exposed, together with other environmental factors such as radiation, electromagnetism and other biological materials can adversely affect certain individuals.

Environmental illness, however, is not yet accepted by most mainstream medical groups. Until these problems are scientifically addressed it is unlikely that much environmentally induced ill health in the human population will be prevented.

Almost invariably, patients suffering any of this group of illnesses will present to their doctor with many seemingly unconnected symptoms. Unlike someone with tonsillitis who will probably present with a sore throat, swollen glands and a temperature which respond to a course of antibiotics, there is no simple recognized pattern of symptoms for environmental illnesses and no simple treatment. Environmental medicine doctors tailor the treatment to the patient after testing and clinical investigation. It is this that makes verifying clinical effectiveness of environmental medicine so difficult.

At the office of Dr. Lemmo, general & aggressive approaches for environmental illnesses are incorporated. Appropriate testing, screening, and investigation may be required to help determine the root(s) of the problem. Because the body has been overwhelmed by environmental factors, detoxification & elimination strategies are key for helping to restore balance to the body & nervous system.

Environmental desensitization techniques, proper nutrition, intravenous support, rest, and stress reduction, are additional tools which have a tremendous impact on detoxifying the mind & body from environmental contamination.
