In adults with selected localized, high-risk soft-tissue sarcomas, adding regional hyperthermia to a specified preoperative chemotherapy programme improved local progression-free survival and disease- or treatment-related survival at long-term follow-up. This supports a particular combined treatment approach in specialist sarcoma care. It is not evidence that all heating devices or hyperthermia alone treat all cancers.
A trial involving 210 participants with locally advanced cervical cancer in a resource-constrained setting reported better disease-free survival and quality of life when modulated electro-hyperthermia was added to chemoradiation. The results concern this specific device-based treatment and cancer setting. They should not be generalized to every cancer or interpreted as proof of an overall-survival benefit from any local hyperthermia service.
